I have a grading in a couple of hours. Lets see if my neck and knee get me through it... not holding my breath.

Cheers fellas! Well, I got the brown belt, but my knee and neck are certainly worse for wear. I might have to admit my limitations one of these days... or just train KU. One of the two...

Recently I have been looking at other schools and what they offer in the way of gradings, which leads me to this question. How many techniques do different schools teach from white to black belt?

What's too many and what's to little?

Is it better to be well skilled in a few or trained in lots?

There seems to be a lot of variation from school to school. As we were discussing yesterday, Aikido only has a handful of core techniques that it uses to address various situations. Judo has the regular 40 throws, plus kata, combos, counters and ground work and the point system used to ensure skill.

I still think it is best to be familiar with as much as possible, but only focus on one or two defences to each likely situation. Many of these will overlap, a right straight punch is remarkably flexible.

I have to agree with that one....and does it matter how the wrist lock goes on as long as it works.

My last grading was Sunday 21st feb 2010! Graded to 6th Kyu! I went in with an almost healed injury( strained achillies tendon),made it thru strikes, blocks and almost all the stance's, but hurt it quit badly on 2nd to last stance, still had kicks to go! missed what felt like a quater of the count's! Wanted to cry! Thought I'd failed! Didn't give up! Had fantastic sensei's giving me encouragement (especially sensei Geoff) Grit my teeth thru combinations! by now totally convinced myself I'd failed! Got to Kata and thought 'Don't care I can alway's try again next time!'

Nerves disappeared and did a kata (Saifa) I was happy with! (Even the bits i didn't quite get powerful enough or timed just right) Then I was surprised I passed!!!!!

We as student's are a reflection of our sensei's and I didn't want to let any of my senseis down by not giving everything i had! Even if i failed! I wanted them and myself to know that i did everything i could!

I Thank ALL my sensei's so much for their training and support! I have some of the greatest instructor's out there!
Happy Green belt here! :excited:

hi all,

recently did my godan ( 5th degree ) grading with the Golden Knights.
the theory behind the grading is that by this point you know how to spar, punch and kick bags, etc. so is showing a more in depth knowledge of technique and human anatomy.
the grading consists of two kata, and sixteen yuksu. in these mere 16 moves, the gradee is attempting to show a bit of everything they have ever learnt. definately not as easy as it sounds.
heres a link to a video of it if you wish to see.

cheers,
peter

Congratulations, and some of those combinations look like a lot of fun, but why don`t you stop when the uke is tapping? Poor thing!
Can you explain the term `yuksu`? is it Korean? ZDR use a term Yatsu or something similar as well, do you know the origin of the word?
